Government ferries are very important for the islands and are used a lot by the local people.
Government ferries are like trains or metros in Indian cities – they're subsidized, well-connected, mostly comfortable, and sometimes crowded, but essential for public transport. The Andaman and Nicobar administration has regular ferry services that connect many islands to the capital city, Port Blair.
The popular islands of Swaraj Dweep (Havelock Island) and Shaheed Dweep (Neil Island) in South Andaman are linked by both government and privately operated ferries. Other tourist-friendly islands like Long Island, Rangat, Mayabunder, Diglipur, and Little Andaman are served exclusively by government ferries managed by the Directorate of Shipping Services (DSS).
